For several years, many Americans have been freely and luxuriously vacationing, planning trips to exotic locations, staying at expensive hotels and resorts and traveling often. In light of the current depressed economy and foreboding signs of recession in the future, it seems that some changes may be in play for vacationing Americans. According to a recent survey conducted by AIG Travel Guard, vacations may be changing for many.
The survey concentrated on travel habits of the past for Americans and travel plans for the future. While most survey participants said they will still plan on taking travel vacations in 2008 they may be adjusting their trips in order to spend less on them. For example, rather than taking fewer trips, many plan to travel closer to home. When seeking accommodations for their trips, economy facilities are more likely to be used rather than more expensive luxury hotels. Many survey takers felt they may even stay with family or friends in lieu of hotels or motels. The same vein was evident in vacation dining; less eating out at expensive restaurants and more at possible local eateries that offer quality food for lower costs.
Money is a critical issue with vacation planners, especially when considering trips to other countries. Over one third of those surveyed felt they would still take international vacations in the same manner as they have in past years. Only 25% said they would keep their travel within the United States instead of traveling outside.
The increasing fuel prices are indeed impacting daily life for those surveyed, but not enough to cause major changes in travel plans. In fact, a mere 3.6 percent only indicated that they would stop traveling altogether in fuel costs kept climbing.
AIG Travel Guard surveyed 300 American travelers to determine these results. It is evident by this sampling of traveling individuals that we Americans do love our travel, but also want to travel while also saving money in hard economic times.
