The Biggest Fun is Often at the Smallest of Cost

A vacation lasting a week or two weeks is great, but also usually quite pricey. There are much more affordable, and yet just as enjoyable, options close to home if you look for them.

Some of life’s greatest pleasures lie within a few miles of home. Libraries, theaters and civic organizations often sponsor little to no cost ventures for families during the summer months that are open to virtually anyone living in the community. Matinees, story hours, arts and craft events and more are low in cost yet big on entertainment value. Since there is little cost involved, the family will be able to enjoy numerous outings together instead of just one vacation. With the savings realized, going out for pizza and ice cream after the activity could become a family tradition.

Not to be overlooked are small town festivals, fairs and block parties. While some feature carnival rides and games, many provide opportunities to participate in free events, such as petting zoos, pie eating contests, craft events and more. Mingling with other neighbors and community members will likely be a social event that is enjoyed more than any other.

Do some research that covers about a 50 mile radius from your home. Are there canoe rentals on a local river? Hiking trails offering close up glimpses of wildlife as well as native flora and fauna? Orchards that provide hay rides, petting zoos as well as opportunities to pick berries or fruit? These and more activities like them can provide a full day’s togetherness and fun for a family, with no admittance charges, only perhaps fees for equipment or products.

Who doesn’t love a day at the beach? If there is an inland lake or a seashore within a reasonable driving distance, pack up the sand toys, umbrella, beach towels and a quick lunch and head for the waves. Kids from toddlers to teenagers love the social atmosphere at the beach, not to mention the fun in the sun, and parents will have time to sit back and just relax as they watch the kids cavort in the sand.

If finances seem just too tight to take a week’s vacation with the family, opt instead for low cost family activities in the local vicinity. They may prove to be so affordable that you’ll be loading the family into the car every weekend for a different and inexpensive venture.
