Okay, I have a question most of you repeat cruisers can help me with: do you have to do formal meals on cruise ships? You know, getting all dressed up in formal clothes and sitting at assigned tables? I probably wouldn’t mind it so much, but I know my husband would hate that kind of thing. He likes better going to sit down dinners, but like in a regular land based restaurant where you can pretty much choose where you sit and have a “come as you are” kind of atmosphere. So I’m not sure if I should pack evening clothes for us in case it’s a mandatory thing, or save the room to pack more casual clothes.
Formal dinner on cruise
First, check with the cruise line of your choice to find out what their policy is on dining. Even if they don’t a formal dining evening, I would suggest taking some dressier clothes anyway. Many cruise lines do have at least one “dress up” formal dinner, where the passengers have the opportunity to dine with the captain. Having at least one formal outfit will give you the choice of to go or not to go, as they are not usually mandatory. Most dining rooms allow casual/dress attire for dinner, but it doesn’t have to be tuxedoes and evening gowns. So the best thing is to check with your cruise ship first for their policy, and go from there.
