While this might be a strange question, here it goes anyway: when do I put on a tuxedo on a cruise? Do I even need one? My wife seems to think we’ll have a dinner where everyone dresses up in the very finest fashions (maybe she just wants to buy a new dress!), and says I’m going to need to rent a tux since I don’t own one. We’ve been on a cruise before, but I sure don’t remember wearing a tux! Is there a fancy dinner or get together where everyone gets dressed up in tuxes and evening gowns?

It depends on your cruise line, Stan. Some cruise ships don’t even require tuxedos; just a suit and tie (probably what you were on the first time). Others may, though, so its best to check with the cruise line you’ve booked with to see if it is required. As far as “when” to wear one; well, you could wear it every night if you want to. Usually, they say the length of the cruise dictates the frequency of formal dinners. If you are on a cruise lasting a few days to one week, the cruise ship will usually just have one formal dinner where everyone dresses up in their finest. One week and more may have two formal dinners. Check with the cruise line you’ve booked with to know once and for all what their requirements are
