Well, I've done it!! I booked my cruise for this winter; an escape to the sunny warm Cayman Islands from the cold and snow!! The only thing I'm debating on is cruise travel insurance. I sure could use some advice from someone who has purchased it, and knows how it works. One thing I'm particularly curious about is how does the cruise travel insurance effective date work? Does it start when the ship leaves the dock, or does it insure my air and port travel as well? And then at the end of the cruise, too; does it end when I get off the ship?
Cruise Travel Insurance
Cruise travel insurance is available either through your cruise line or can be obtained through an independent agency. The coverage policies differ from carrier to carrier, but in general, trip cancellation policies are effective within 24 hours of buying the coverage. All other coverages may not be effective until the date of departure on your trip. The best advice is to check all your options, review the cruise ship policy and check with a couple of independent agencies. Carnival Cruise Lines advertises a policy that covers a traveler "before, during and after" the trip. Independent agencies may cover air, as well. Just be sure to fully understand coverages and effective dates. You will want to find out if everyone traveling with you will be covered, as well.
