Is it safe to travel on Cruise ships?

Hello. So I am researching my upcoming cruise and I must say that I am getting a little feeling of fear from the unknown.

I am curious as to just how safe a cruise liner is. I imagine that there are safety guidelines that must be followed and I imagine those guidelines are really strict. I am also imagining that the cruise lines only hire the best and that their food is regulated by guidelines.

My fear comes from both being on the water and docking at foreign countries. I promised myself I would not watch the movie Titanic at all this summer. I imagine though that Cruise ships have come along way since the early 1900's.
As far as travel into other countries, is it a safe time to go? Is there such a thing as a safer time?
Thanks

Cruise travel is the safest way to travel When you think about safety and risks of traveling using other means of transportation.  According to International Council of Cruise Lines "During the Last two decades, North American cruise lines have maintained the best safety record in the travel industry" A road trip has more risk than cruise travel.  The odds of getting killed or injured in an automobile accident are thousand times greater than traveling on a cruise ship.

Cruise lines have had U.S. Coast guard approved security plans in place even before September 11, 2001. Cruise ship security measures include  100 percent screening of all passengers and their carry on baggages, intensified  screening of passenger lists and passenger identification, restricted access to any sensitive vessel or terminal areas, stringent measures to deter unauthorized entry and illegal activity. Shipping lines conduct a comrehensive screening process before hiring employees to work on board their cruise ships.

Crime abroad cruise ship is very rare. Besides, where can someone go? There is very little place to hide onboard a ship.
