Family cruise lines

Is there a ‘best cruise line” for family travel? I know about Disney cruises, but I’m not sure if there are better and different options for family cruises that should be considered.

I have heard a lot of cruise lines being referred to as “party boats”, and I guess I don’t really want to have my family cruise on one like that. I don’t want to constantly worry about what my kids will be seeing and exposed to on a more adult cruise line.

I am more interested in cruises featuring family oriented activities and values, cruises that encourage a family atmosphere

You can never go wrong with a Disney cruise, which specifically caters to family cruise experiences. But don’t overlook the other major cruise lines. Despite the rumors of “party boats”, many offer very positive family experiences.

Try some of the on-line websites, like cruisesforfamilies.com, to get good ideas of other possibilities. All of the major lines, such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian offer excellent children’s programs that keep them away from the more adult activities and into more age-appropriate activities.

Once you decide on a family-friendly cruise line, carefully choose activities that will keep your family together for a great experience.

I agree. Cruise lines are becoming more family friendly - even in the 'party boats'.

Watch out however for the phrase 'age-appropriate activities' when checking out a cruise line for your family. Some offer activities only when there are certain number of kids on the ship. Others only offer few activities for part of the day.

Also ask the type of activity. Some ships offer enrichment play activities whilst others just show kids movies and give them ice cream. Bottom line, you get what you pay for.
