The affect of Homeland Security on cruise travel

I’m wondering what everyone thinks about the effect of the Homeland Security and cruise travel industry. Do you think cruise travel has decreased since the 9-11 threat and the new regulations were imposed by Homeland Security? Personally, I feel that the new regulations requiring a passport is a step in the right direction, and that all those traveling on a cruise line should feel safer with the stepped up security. Knowing that each person is being verified and cleared should be a comfort. I’d be interested to hear what everyone thinks, and how you feel it may have affected the industry, whether positive or negative.

Homeland Security measures

I believe certainly there have been some effects on cruising due to the Homeland Security measures of recent years. Mostly in the best interests of passengers, in my view. As a matter of fact, several studies have shown that cruise travel has increased in the past several years. This may very well be the result of the increased security measures. While many cruisers may stay closer to home rather than branch out into foreign waters, cruising is still just as popular if not more so than in years before 9.11. And, as long as passengers recognize and accept the increased measures that cruise lines are adopting on the basis of safety, cruising should only continue in its popularity. Passengers should expect heightened security measures both at embarkation and port calls. Many cruise lines do not allow guest visitors. All items brought on board are subject to search, and luggage is scanned. Security personnel are evident throughout the ships. All passengers should welcome these measures as protection of their own security.
