For anyone with special needs, no door should ever be closed. Cruise ships are no exception, and they have done an admirable job to meet the needs of those who need a few adjustments to make their cruise experience just as pleasurable as any other guest.
When choosing a cruise line for an individual with special needs, the most important thing to do is to communicate with the cruise line. Let them know what needs are to be anticipated to make sure they are able to accommodate them. Depending on the disability, a few minor tweaks may be all that is needed to make life on the cruise ship more enjoyable.
Most cruise ships have a number of rooms that are specifically designed to make cruise life easier for the disabled. Lower light switches, lipless thresholds and easily assessable restrooms are just a few of the amenities. Wider doorways are an important feature to anyone utilizing a wheelchair or electric scooter, so be sure to inquire before embarking on the cruise.
If a service dog is required by the guest, several questions will need to be addressed. An appropriate “potty” spot will be a necessity, and if your dog has any phobias or preferences, they need to be addressed before the ship leaves port to ensure the animal will be a comfortable and satisfied companion. Likewise, if there are any restrictions or policies enforced by the cruise line, it is best to have knowledge of them ahead of time to ensure that the guest will be comfortable with complying with them.
All cruise ships are striving to be accommodating of the special needs guest. While newer ships may be more equipped to meet the needs of the disabled guest, the older ships as well are working together with their passengers to make them more user friendly for every guest. Each cruise line may have its strengths and weaknesses in their accommodations, so be sure to communicate clearly with the cruise line of choice for specific needs. Then sit back and enjoy the cruise!
