It’s not that your favourite cheesy, creamy, seafood indulgences have been wiped out completely by cruise lines, it’s just that now with your high-cholesterol options, you will also have leaner, more wholesome, healthier options alongside of the gluttonous indulgences.
The fears of the health-conscious travelers concerning an unjustified stereotype of junk-food dominated cruise ship catering may not be placed completely at ease, but......
‘We’re hoping it will dispel the myth that a cruise experience is just about overeating,’ said Mimi Wesiband, spokeswoman for Crystal, to CNN reporters on the topic of the Crystal’s recently revamped buffet menu of a wider selection of fresh fruits and whole grains.
The sudden trend in healthier options is not that new. Royal Caribbean Cruises introduced a ‘Vitality’ program a year ago, focusing on healthier meals and exercise activities with their customers’ sailing experience.
‘I always used to try to lose a few pounds in anticipation (of sailing), but I’ve found that’s really not necessary,’ said Linda Coffman to CNN reporters.
Salad bars onboard now feature low-fat yoghurts, smaller portion sizes and some menus provide caloric information. Midnight buffets have since been cut from Royal Caribbean, and much more focus has been issued on virtual trainer kiosks, self-guided running maps and classes which guide passengers on healthier choices within the ship’s eateries.
As some cruises last for several weeks, the healthier options are assuring to potential passengers who might have previously been wary of their diets being trivialised during their holiday.
Yet, naturally, the whole point of a holiday is to relax and not feel the pressure of being so restrained, which is why the indulgences remain available as part of the fully diverse menus onboard.
‘People are going to continue to have that high-end lobster too,’ said Robin Diedrich, leisure analyst, to CNN reporters. If you are planning your next cruise and don't want to blow your diet, remember there are plenty of choices for you. You can indulge once in a while then get back on to the healtier fruits and salads.
