When you really need to Explore in Style — and Score big with Luxurious Expedition Cruises

Thoughts of an expedition cruise can conjure up visions of an Admiral Byrd type figure; adventurous, vigorous and willing to put up with harsh conditions in order to venture to new lands. Expedition cruises today don’t discover new lands, but they do discover new interest by carrying curious passengers to areas that may seem new; rugged, uninhabited and teeming with strange wildlife. Compared to luxury ships that encourage relaxation and fun, expedition ships are designed for adventure and exploration. Now, however, the line has been crossed; combining expedition and luxury, showing that exploratory journeys can be made in style.

A recent acquisition by Silversea of a 6,000 plus ton ice-rated ship was newly launched this past June as the Prince Albert II; a cleverly modified version of its former expedition-only self into a delux-pedition cruise ship. Revamped from a functional discovery ship intended merely for transport, the new design features more spacious and fashionable cabins, a well-equipped library and an Internet center; all previously unheard of on an expedition ship. One feature that exemplifies the upscale style of the ship are six luxury suites that consume an entire top floor, capable of forming either a gigantic, multi-room suite or to be used as individual, separate units.

The millions of dollars spent by Silversea are believed by its owners to be an investment toward a new trend of wealthy individuals who want adventure in their cruise without sacrificing the elegant touches. Offering both whirlpools and lectures may seem an odd combination aboard a discovery ship, yet Silversea feels the Prince Albert II is a forerunner in a market that seeks to travel in the comfort of luxury to the exciting adventures of locations that only an expedition ship can venture.

For the die-hard explorer wanting to recreate the Admiral Byrd experience, perhaps dressing for dinner and relaxing in a spa is more glitz and bother than they desire. For the luxury loving individual with an adventurous heart, however, the Silversea’s Prince Albert II is a winner.
