Dollar Sense on Cruises

Budgeting for a vacation just makes good sense, and cruises are no exception. You proudly shop around for just the right cruise at the right price, marveling at getting such a good deal; then once on board, promptly spend the next three months’ paychecks on the many extras available. Use good dollar sense on your next cruise to feel as good after the vacation as you do during it by following just a few tips.

Exciting as a cruise vacation is, you should keep in mind that most souvenirs will inevitably be packed away and forgotten. Those items prominently displayed or offered aboard the ship will most likely be gathering dust before the year is out. A printed napkin from that quaint diner at port costs nothing, yet recalls pleasant memories in a scrapbook. Consider seashells, flower petals or your own photographs to be souvenirs and save a bundle.

Consuming food and drink may also consume your dollars on a cruise. The free food offered in the many eateries on-board is equal in variety and quality as the food served in the higher-end ship restaurants, so why buy? Consider alcoholic beverages and sodas as a treat, purchased sparingly. Water flows freely on ships, and easy to use drink mix packages fit nicely in a suitcase. Pack your favorite mug; take advantage of the well-stocked ice bucket in your room to make a healthy, refreshing and free drink.

Photographers mill about the ship continuously, ready to capture your smiling likeness. There is no obligation to buy; rather, pack a digital camera and ask other passengers to take your photo. No photographer fees, no developing fees, just wonderful pictures.

Other money-sapping events are art auctions, casinos, and specialty shops. If you must visit these events, leave the money behind, promising yourself a return trip if you truly can’t resist. Chances are, after thinking it over, you will pass on the purchase. Also, reconsider costly planned shore excursions, unless there is a destination you must see.

The bottom line is to determine your budget before embarking, and then make yourself stick to it. The savings you realize through dollar sense can be put toward next year’s cruise!
