If it is Complementary, it’s Free ….Right?

Webster’s Dictionary offers the following definition of the word “complimentary”: 2: given free as a courtesy or favor

In a case last year, a California woman purchased a travel package membership that was touted as providing its members with discounted travel rates and a certificate promotion offering a complimentary cruise. Upon booking the cruise, however, the woman found that instead of being complimentary in the Webster meaning of the word, it was going to cost her $299 each for herself and her husband. When she called the company for an explanation, she was told “complimentary doesn’t necessarily mean free”.

There are many offers on the internet and through travel publications that attempt to build their memberships through cleverly worded advertisements and promises. Be very wary, and carefully scrutinize any offers and contracts that you may be interested in purchasing. The power of the word is mighty, and often people skim advertisements and pick up only on those words they wish to hear. “Free”, “complimentary”, “discount”, and “low-cost” are all key words that bring the eye to the offer. Many times the item that is actually being offered is totally different than you are led to believe.

For the California woman, perhaps the complimentary item was actually the certificate offered. The cruise itself was definitely not complimentary, nor even discounted. An outright lie? Probably not, but certainly it was an unscrupulous means of obtaining her cash through misleading her.

The rule of thumb remains the same: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Whenever a contract is involved in any dealing that costs an individual a sum of money, it is crucial to read and understand every word. If not easily understood, employ a lawyer to examine it for you before making any commitment.
