One aspect of cruise travel that many people forget to take into consideration is the sometimes tedious process of getting on and off the ship. There are some tips to use that can help make both embarkation and disembarkation much smoother, and much less frustrating for you, the passenger.
First and foremost, be sure to have your paperwork in order ahead of time. Filling out passes and checking in on-line as early as possible takes a large burden off your shoulders. Be sure to have all of your documentation in order; identification, passport, passes, etc. and keep them within easy reach for effortless check-ins.
A general consensus among repeat cruisers is that it definitely is worth getting to the city of port a day ahead of your boarding schedule. After a night’s stay at a hotel of your choice, treat yourself to a taxi cab ride to the port. It will cost a bit more, but the time it saves you once you arrive at port will more than compensate for the cost. Bus passengers arriving at the pier are made to wait in a queue while taxis drive right up and deposit the guests at the check-in line. Plan to arrive early, as the lines for security and check-in can be lengthy.
When possible, pack as lightly as possible. If you are able to carry on all of your luggage instead of checking it through you will save time. Be sure the luggage is easy to manage, however; suitcases on wheels are lifesavers when you have to tote them around for a while before getting in to your cabin.
Getting off the ship can be tricky, as well. Having your baggage all packed and ready to go first thing in the morning will be a big advantage. Pack a big heaping helping of patience since disembarkation may take a bit. A few snacks and a bottle of water won’t hurt, either. Hopefully, you’ve booked your return flight for the day after disembarkation to relieve any timeframe stresses.
While getting on and off the ship can sometimes be a time consuming affair, remember the time spent on the ship is what really counts.
