Immunization Facts-What You Need to Know Before the Cruise Trip

Traveling within the United States and Canada is a relatively carefree venture when considering health issues. Rarely, if ever, is there a situation encountered that would require any extra immunization for protection. That is not the case, however, when traveling outside these areas where the danger of contracting certain diseases exists. Determining whether or not immunizations are needed in your next trip can save you a world of worry.

Several diseases put a traveler at risk when traveling outside of the United States and Canada. When considering a trip to another country, check with your own doctor for information on immunizations to ensure that you will be adequately protected. Depending upon the destination, diseases such as Hepatitis A and B, meningococcal disease, tuberculosis, malaria and yellow fever could jeopardize not only your vacation but also your lifelong wellbeing.

Africa, Mexico, Central and South America, Asia, Australia and the South Pacific, the Middle East and Eastern Europe are places that commonly require shots, although some of those required are immunizations that are routinely issued in the US as part of its health requirement.

Even popular destinations such as the Caribbean and the Bahamas carry the risk of Hepatitis A and B and Typhoid. Exposure occurs through food and water with all of these, placing any unvaccinated person at risk.

It is important to consult with your doctor as soon as possible prior to your trip, preferably 4-6 weeks, as some immunizations may require multiple doses, and also to allow the vaccines to take effect.

Keep in mind that preventing a disease is a hundredfold easier than combating the effects of one. Your vacation should be an enjoyable one; prepare and protect yourself with the appropriate immunizations to ensure a happy and healthy trip abroad.
