With an unstable economy, we are in the age of “grab your bag and go” cruise opportunities. Because people are most conservative with their money when job security is nil, magnificent cruise ships destined for beautiful and exotic locations are sailing away with only about half the passengers as they did several years ago.
Trying to glean what they can from the traveler circuit, the cruise industry in general is slashing prices on some of their cruises. While the prices are just about the lowest ever seen, there is a drawback in most cases: the departure date is probably within a week or two. Now, if you are a prepared last minute traveler, this won’t pose a problem. Before you let that low, low cruise price put your head in the clouds, make sure you know the ins and outs of last minute travel.
1. Look at the details closely. If you need to a foreign country to catch up with a ship in progress, make sure you have your passport. Check closely for any additional documents you might need; visas, inoculations or any other special papers. Do you have enough time to obtain these?
2. Check airfare costs to get you to the port city. Even a really great cruise deal can deflate quickly with an over inflated airfare. Remember, you likely won’t be able to meet a 14 day booking requirement.
3. Can you find a traveling companion who is as flexible with time as you are? Remember that those greatly discounted cruise fares are based on double occupancy. There are additional charges, called single supplements, for those who are booking as a single. If you are going solo, check for any available discounts on the supplement, as well. What do you have to lose?
Let’s say you’ve passed the above trials, and are ready to board the ship. Your room may not be in the most elite class, since discounted prices usually apply to lower priced staterooms. But it’s a place to lay your head at night after a day in the sun! Don’t worry that you will be deprived of the great time advance bookers will be having with shore excursions. Most of these will still have room for you, if you wish.
Last minute cruises have their drawbacks, but being aware of all of the pitfalls before handing over the cash will help increase your enjoyment. It’s a daring move; flying away at the drop of a hat to join a cruise, but it could very well be the most stimulating and exciting trip you ever take for little money.
