Although the economy has still not yet rebounded, people are beginning to venture out and travel once again. The snow has melted; gray skies have given way to sunny blue and folks are tentatively looking at vacation prices. What they are seeing are some of the lowest prices in years in hotels, cruises, resorts and yes, even airfare in some cases. Even gas prices have come down from the clouds, prompting many to hit the pavement on road trips.
Summer travel has traditionally been the mainstay of the tourism industry. In the past, travelers have planned their vacations well in advance to obtain the best prices and secure their bookings. Now the strategies have changed, with people keeping an eagle eye on prices and fares to their desired destinations; waiting for them to drop down to a level that makes them almost impossible to pass up. And they are dropping; sometimes for a limited time, sometimes for only select days, but they are dropping and consumers are there waiting.
This type of fare shopping is becoming the norm, as people scout around for the best prices available in order to be able to afford travel. Becoming more selective and being willing to wait for those last minute deals is saving travelers money even if they have to sacrifice some convenience. Finding the cheapest car rental, for example, might mean having to take a shuttle to reach the agency.
Many travelers are planning to drive to destinations this year; preferring several small “staycations” instead of one full-blown vacation. Local hotels around attractions are gearing up for this local business, and are offering some great deals to entice those travelers.
While prices are down for almost every travel venue, some experts predict that they will even get better for travelers later in the year. Believing that travel operators will be a bit hungrier for consumer business later in the year, competition levels will rise; resulting in even lower travel costs.
Don’t discard the idea of taking a vacation this year; the travel industry has become a buyer’s market with the odds in your favor for a great summer vacation that is also much more affordable than in past years.
