Ask almost anyone nearing the age of retirement what their plans are after the big day, and most will include some type of travel in their plans. Much of life up to this point has been spent working and building a family life; now is the time for the sweet taste of freedom.
Travel plans will certainly be different for each. Some truly love being continually around their home and family, and may only wish to take the occasional long weekend trips. Others may long for one spectacular trip each year; perhaps an extended cruise to exotic ports. Still others may just sell the home, buy an RV and hit the road, where a different landscape greets them every morning they open the door.
Planning the trips may take individual avenues, as well. For some people, nothing will do but to visit a travel agent, who will arrange every nut and bolt detail of the trip for them. Poring over travel guides and watching the Travel Channel on television might be in order for others, who find the decision and planning process just as exciting as the trip itself. And for that gypsy RVer, who cares where you wake up? Every day is an adventure!
Many people enjoy the social atmosphere of traveling with groups. For these, tour companies galore exist with different itineraries of sightseeing available for choosing. Taking a cruise is another option; you may board alone, but after that, you are in the throes of social activity if you desire. Some are more focused on their destination and its activities than on the social aspect; flying off to Italy and spending a few weeks browsing the beauty and history the city offers.
Often, retirees look forward to this time as being carefree, with no responsibilities; yet when the time arrives, find themselves bored and unchallenged. Volunteer opportunities await for those who still have plenty to offer individuals and communities in need of help. Home building projects, teaching language skills to young and old alike and missionary services are heartwarming and worthwhile ventures for those seeking to fill some of their hours with community work.
Retiring is a long awaited event; one that many begin to plan for years ahead. Travel, in whatever form desired, is one of the top activities that entice. The ticket to freedom takes many forms.
